The DETAILLs project, part of the Erasmus+ initiative, is taking an innovative approach by
integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with sustainability in a practical, real-world setting
through Living Labs. As part of its effort to revolutionize higher education, the project has
developed a series of activities to ensure that students and educators alike are equipped
with the necessary skills and tools. One of the key components of this effort is the
identification and implementation of the best educational practices to teach AI-driven
sustainable design in Living Labs.
Transforming Education Through Best Practices
This activity is a pivotal part of the DETAILLs project, tasked with identifying and
incorporating the best educational practices for teaching AI-driven sustainable design
within Living Labs. Living Labs are experimental spaces where students collaborate with
industry professionals to tackle real-world sustainability challenges. By focusing on hands-
on experience and project-based learning, these labs provide an immersive learning
environment.
To search for best practices, the project utilized a comprehensive methodology, including a
Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and Named Entity Recognition (NER), to extract
relevant educational practices. Through this rigorous approach, it was found that project
work, interactive learning, and collaboration with stakeholders were among the most
effective teaching methods.
Building on Industry Insights and Case Studies
To ensure the curriculum is not only innovative but also aligned with the evolving needs of
the workforce, this activity expanded its research to include industry reports and case
studies. These sources provided a broader perspective on how AI and sustainability are
being integrated in industrial settings, offering valuable insights into the skills required by
professionals today and in the future. The research identified that AI-related skills, such as
prompt engineering, data analysis, and ethical considerations of AI use, are critical in the
modern workplace. This directly informs the educational strategies adopted in the
DETAILLs curriculum, ensuring students are prepared for these emerging challenges.
The research and implementation of best practices are laying the groundwork for a
transformative approach to higher education. As we look ahead, the project’s focus on
continuous improvement through feedback, innovation, and real-world application will
ensure that students emerge from the program ready to tackle the complex challenges of
sustainable development. In the DETAILLs Living Labs, students don’t just learn—they
innovate, adapt, and lead the way forward.
